massage2 Myotherapists assess and physically treat myofascial pain, injury and dysfunction affecting movement and mobility. Myotherapy is applied in the preventative, corrective and rehabilitative phases of therapy to restore and maintain the normal integrity of the soft tissue structure (muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia) of the human body.

Pain or symptoms caused by muscle (myo) or fascia is described as myofascial. Myofascial pain is usually not specific and is often described by the patient as a ‘deep ache’, ‘tightness’ or ‘tenderness’ in an area. It can vary in intensity and radiate to other areas. Other symptoms can include reduced range of motion of muscles and joints, stiffness, fatigue, weakness, numbness or a tingling sensation. There are many other symptoms depending on the condition and patients can have one or many symptoms.

What are chakras? Is there scientific evidence for their existence? How are they related to karma, to health, and to spiritual practice? Are they related to the energy meridians of acupuncture? This course addresses theses questions.

Chakra Meditation: Chakra meditation focuses on moving our energy and awareness into our spine. Chakra meditation is a broad term that includes several forms of practice, each form requiring a different kind of focus and effort. We will explore a range of these techniques, from mental mantras to muscular contractions. The goal is to develop a repertoire of techniques best suited to each practitioner.

Fascia and Meridians: Dr. Motoyama postulated and demonstrated that there is a flow of energy that measurably alters the conductivity of water channels within fascia. He believes these water channels are the meridians of acupuncture theory. This theory explains why yoga exercises that gently stress the fascia were developed in ancient times. We will explore this fascia-meridian theory is some detail.

COMING UP STUDIES

This unit is a study of the ancient text referred to as “Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras”. It was Patanjali who first organized the many various yoga practices into eight limbs, from ethical behavior to the deepest states of meditative absorption. We will put into practice the system Patanjali develops, including asana, pranayama, and meditation.

We can practice yoga techniques without a theory but our enthusiasm might lapse as the years go by because the process of mental purification can be frustratingly slow. A mature intellectual conviction can sustain us through the inevitable ups and downs of our spiritual life. Intellectual conviction develops from an honest effort to understand what we are doing and why we are doing it.

We approach the Yoga Sutras on four levels:

  1. We chant key sutras in sanskrit.
  2. We read all of the sutras in English.
  3. We outline in detail the metaphysics of Patanjali’s system.
  4. We practice pranayama and meditation in the framework discussed by Patanjali.
